Defense Secretary Robert Gates recently criticized the U.S. military for not doing enough to support troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, distinguishing the Air Force for adapting too slowly to new enemies on the battlefield. He accused the military leaders who are "stuck in old ways of doing business. "This may seem strange to hear a government official who knows full well that the military is rooted in tradition command and leadership that creates an order from top down management style and encourage and predictability, rather than innovation and adaptability.

But in a world of chaos and constantly changing conditions, Mr. Gates realizes that the ability to change and adapt is the key to success Military: What worked in the past may now be outdated and ineffective approach.

Mr. Gates has stressed a truism that American business organizations of all types and sizes have witnessed and / or experienced during the last 75 years: Organizations Unadaptive underperform and / or fail in the long term. Companies such as Sears & Roebuck, K-Mart, Pam Am, Howard Johnson, Armor & Company, Westinghouse Electric are examples of companies that were formerly in the top of their industries only to be toppled by competitors who have looked to the future, relevant and directed by them. And the way their competitors did, he was not coping heads top-down managers.

So what is the difference between the two?

Consider top-down managers first. These managers thinkers, most are predominantly linear. Linear thinkers are rational, logical and analytical. They relate mainly to this, the future is not. They tend to stay with things that worked well in the past as opposed to experimenting with the unknown.

They are highly organized individuals who value order and predictability. They are in favor of rules and procedures to ensure that orders are still the top to the lowest level. His mentality is that managers think, workers do (as they say ).... an idea generated by the father of scientific management, Frederick W. Taylor in the 20th century. This approach worked well then for the U.S. economy growing industry. But today, things are very different. Now we are living and working in knowledge economy.

If you worked for one of these managers allowed, you know first hand how autocratic and controlling they can be. Gather a group of those linear thinkers and place on top to manage the organization, and guess what you wear? A cover tight organization that does everything by the rules, creating a bureaucracy that stifles innovation and creativity if is myopic, inflexible and unadaptive.

Enlightened leaders are very different adaptive top-down managers. They tend to be either linear in their thinking. These leaders are more intuitive, has more knowledge and more creative. Being more conceptual, the seat of the picture "great" Futurists are oriented, possess a general intelligence and emotional.

They have greater spontaneity and flexibility, integration balanced process of rational analysis imaginative and unconventional. They have the ability to take a fresh perspective to a complex problem Age and reassemble interrelated parts of the problem in the novel and unusual way for a viable solution. They are much better at dealing the complex nonlinear nature, the competitive environment of our global economic environment.

One might think that high tech companies over the the head to adapt to new senior leaders like Apple, Google, Nintendo, Microsoft and Amazon.com. But if you look at this recent list of top 25 companies newly developed innovative BusinessWeek (4/28/2008), you may be surprised to find more traditional businesses like General Electric, Toyota Motor, Hewlett Packard, Wal-Mart and Procter & Gamble included in the list of new high technology companies. These more traditional companies that are leaders adaptation building cultures that value creative people in good and bad.

The good news is that managers may be more adaptable to change and, as leaders of traditional societies can become more innovative. As leaders of executive training company, I worked with hundreds of executives over the past 20 years have seen a transformation of many people who have changed from top to bottom for the leaders of the administration adaptation. Every thought and behavior can be changed ... is called learning. For evaluation, self-awareness, learning action, and training managers leaders may be more effective and adaptable.

In essence, my experience, research and observations led me to conclude that the statement "Leaders are born, not made, is a myth.
