No paints usually have an edge at the back of them as frames?
We bought two old paintings of artists appearing in a Danish gallery in Copenhagen, but they said no advice on the back? Is this normal? Thank you PS: we know nothing of art! ignorance force when it comes to art Unfortunetly ... but try to change that! The paintings are already framed.
It is not uncommon tables do not have them back on board. There was some disagreement on which the practice of most authors, artists and conservationists. Seems to be explained by the perception that these jobs should be able to "breath" as some suggest. In other words, it allows the art to expand and contract freely with changes in temperature and humidity. But canvases not breathe. When some pictures are supported can be found holes in the back for air circulation. Once more the airflow is not necessary. The only reason to use a media card is used to protect the paint against marks, tears and punctures and insects that feed on materials. Remember that you can still damage to paint on the front. If the painting is valuable or irreplaceable buy, stronger support should also consider the use of UV filters Plexiglas adequate space between art and Plexiglas. One last note. The paint must be installed safely, but not restrictive. No diving but a kind of material compensation. If there is any concern about attacks mold art you put in damages if it supports the canvas or not. Always handle, store and hang art in a reasonably stable environment. I would not spend a great painting, because of the inadequate preparation and can be rethought.
