Anyone who lives in Southern California and enjoyed the coast of San Diego to San Francisco have seen the oil rigs Sea along the coast of Santa Barbara, Oxnard, Ventura and Long Beach. If you live in one of the other coastal cities such as Corona del Mar, San Diego, Pacific Beach, Mission Beach, La Jolla, Del Mar, Encinitas, Solana Beach, Cardiff, Carlsbad, Oceanside, San Clemente, San Juan Capistrano, Laguna Beach, Newport Beach, Huntington Beach, Pismo Beach, Morro Bay, Cambria and San Simeon sees something different - beaches without oil platform offshore.
In the midst of the crisis U.S. financial and on the same weekend that Congress establish a $ 700 billion rescue U.S. Congress has ended by a maximum 26-year ban on offshore drilling to the dismay of environmentalists. The Drill Now movement and chants of "Drill, baby, drill" may have won a small skirmish on the issue of environment environment, but California has the last word.
Despite the ban on drilling offshore oil, drilling is estimated that at least off the coast of California is unlikely to occur for many years, if ever. Democrats Congress are already vowing to reinstate the prohibition that a new Congress is seated in four months. And the political opposition, laws protect the marine environment and business demands by environmental groups makes California offshore oil drilling event unlikely.
First, there is a general belief of Californians, including the governor, the coast of California is a treasure international, much less a draw for tourists from around the world. Few politicians in the state treasury would dare threaten it.
Second, a law passed by former Governor Pete Wilson and a ban on all offshore drilling, California three miles off the coast.
Thirdly, there are 300 miles of national marine sanctuaries along the coast of California that the ban on oil drilling.
Fourthly, almost all coastal counties in the State of California has enacted ordinances banning new pipelines, oil terminals and storage tanks in the state.
Fifth, environmental groups are already promising to sue, and could be joined by the Commission on the California coast.
While California has about 30 oil platforms off the coast of Santa Barbara, Ventura and Long Beach that were built in the 1950s, none of the oil platforms have been built in over 50 years.
It is estimated that California has at least 10.5 billion barrels of oil offshore - about a year and a half of the annual supply of the nation. This figure is comparable to estimation of oil in the National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska (ANWR).
But in any case, despite the oil crisis and the financial crisis in view of global warming and calls for investment in alternative energies, Californians are becoming more environmentally conscious. Any politician running on any platform (oil or not) based on drilling offshore risk for scenic California, will have a difficult time being chosen.
